A special motorcycle squad has been deployed by the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) to nab errant and reckless bus drivers who flout road rules.

The SLTB has formed seven motorcycle teams to bring the offenders who do not follow the laws within the Western Province to book.

The major objective of the program is to avoid passenger injuries and deaths in road accidents and improve road safety.

All illegal activities of conductors and drivers relating to not issuing tickets, travelling without uniforms and passengers travelling without tickets, will be punished.

The teams will be monitoring the activities of bus operators in the Western Province and stern action will be taken and fines imposed on violators. "We will take immediate action to solve problems relating to public transport to facilitate the people," he said. "If buses are halted for a long time at bus halts, then action will be taken, he said.(DN)
