The Colombo Municipality is planning to enforce a ban on pasting posters within the Colombo City limits in a bid to give it a cleaner appearance.

Special Administrator Omar Kamil said the council would begin by creating awareness among the people before they adhere to its request to paste posters only on bill boards that have been put up at certain places in the city.

He said this would be followed by the strict enforcement of the law while law breakers would be penalized.

Mr. Kamil said the Municipality would also look into the possibility of penalizing those who urinate in public places.

“The police are arresting those who dump garbage on the road and they should do the same with those who urinate in public places,” he said

Meanwhile the Municipality had also decided to set up traffic lights on pedestrian crossings as well. Under this system pedestrians will be allowed to cross the road only when the light flashes green.

These lights have come up along Duplication Road and the project would be soon extended to other city roads as well.

The signal lights on Duplication Road will help provide safety to the school children studying at several schools in the vicinity. (DM)
