The Lanka Private Bus Owners Association (LPBOA) and the Lanka Omni Bus Owners Association (LOBOA) will go on a countrywide strike from midnight tomorrow.

According to the president of the LPBOA Gemunu Wijerathna, the strike will continue indefinitely till their demands are met..

Though initially it was announced that only busses operating in the Western Province will halt their services, it was later decided to incorporate private busses operating islandwide for the strike.

The two private bus owner associations are launching the strike protesting against the Western Provincial Council raising the monthly Bus Service Charge from Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 from August 1. According to private bus owners, the National Transport Commission has also increased the Route Permit charges, Monthly Entry Permit Charges and Passenger Service Charges by 100% on 12 different occasions.

Bus owners are also demanding that the minimum bus fare of Rs 6 be increased to Rs 7 as well. According to the LPBOA and OBOA, they have resorted to this drastic measure since the officials have continuously avoided granting their requests.(Nation)
