During the first six month of this year 152,174 new vehicles have been registered with the Commissioner of Motor Traffic. This is an increase of 66,153 vehicles compared to the corresponding period last year.

A spokesman for the Department of Motor Traffic told The Island yesterday that of the 152,174 vehicles registered so far, motor cycles accounted for 94,146, three-wheelers 35,032 and motor cars 2,610.

He said that 204,475 vehicles had been registered last year, that included 135,421 motor cycles, 37,364 three-wheelers and 5,762 cars.

He said that there has been an increase in the registration of motor cycles, particularly from the Northern and Eastern provinces after the War on Terrorism ended in May last year.

The spokesman also said more motor cycles and three-wheelers were being registered following leasing schemes introduced by the State and mercantile institutions.(Island)
