The Education Minister said yesterday the National Schools would conduct Saturday classes for Advanced Level and Ordinary Level students from underprivileged schools from September onwards.

The Minister Bandula Gunawardane said he had a meeting with the National School Principals on Saturday.

He noted this would be done in collaboration with the Department of Examinations to increase the number of students passing the national exams. For the students who sit the GCE O/L Examination in December, the Minister said, Saturday classes would start in National Schools in September and continue till November.

“In this exercise, Colombo Royal College is expected to conduct classes for students from the underprivileged schools in its surroundings. All the National Schools are required to conduct these classes,” he said. Mr. Gunawardane noted that revision lessons would be conducted at these ‘extra classes’.

“The Department of Examinations will make model question papers to be discussed at these classes.  These are revision classes.  Only core subjects such as Mathematics, Science and English will be taught,” he said.

Classes for the Advanced Level students would be conducted from January to July every year.(DM)
