Customs bare Rs 5 b tax fraud Print E-mail
Staff Writer | Monday, 12 Jul 2010
The Customs has bared a Rs. 5 billion plus tax fraud involving a leading vehicle importer in the country. Investigations into the scam has uncovered that the organization involved in vehicle imports has produced fraudulent documents to the Customs to evade tax.

It is said that the importer has brought double cabs after filing requests to import single door cabs to evade the higher tax imposed on the former.

The Customs has levied additional fines on 117 such imported cabs. However, the Customs say that the importer has failed to pay the fines to get the detained vehicles released.

Customs sources allege that the importer’s reluctance to pay fines is due to the involvement of a political hand. The detection involving the tax evasion scam has been made by the Cab Unit of the Sri Lanka Customs Investigations Division.(DN)
