The government of Sri Lanka will commence the national programme to develop island wide multi religious committees. The launching of the project is scheduled to start from Vavuniya Sunday.
In his capacity as the Buddha Sasana & Religious Affairs Minister Prime Minister Mr. D. M. Jayaratne will initiate the programme during 10th and 11th of July in Vavuniya district with the guidance of President Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa. Under this programme steps will be taken to identify the prominent issues of Buddhist and Hindu temples, Islamic mosques and Catholic churches and alleviate them immediately. The programme intends to build religious harmony between communities and thereby attain economic development. The inaugurating step will be to discuss with all the religious leaders in Vavuniya and identify the religious centres which require renovation without delay. There are 20 Buddhist temples, 15 Catholic churches, 18 Islamic mosques and 301 Hindu temples in Vavuniya district and Prime Minister has taken measures to alleviate problems in all these religious centers. Prior to the commencement of the programme Mr. Jayaratne will distribute machinery used for agricultural purposes, hold health camps and distribute high yielding coconut plants to the economically marginalized people in the area.(NLK)
