The National Zoological Gardens in Dehiwela would soon receive six pairs of Penguins from the Japan Zoo in an animal exchange, a Zoo official said.

"We will be getting the penguins in April-during the school vacation- probably before the Sinhala -Tamil New Year," he said.

They are yet to decide on what to give in return. They might be mammalian or reptilian species, he said.

Education Officer of the Zoo, Nihal Senerath de Silva told The Island yesterday the Zoo had had 10 penguins, but they had perished one by one and the last one died three years back.

"Our inspection revealed that they had died due to climatic changes with a fungus affecting their lungs," he said.

According to scientists, currently all 17 species of penguins are legally protected from hunters and egg collectors. At least three species are considered at risk.(Island)
