The Trade Marketing Development and Consumer Affairs Ministry will raid traders who sells rice at high prices tomorrow onwards and will take legal steps against them, said Trade Marketing and Consumer Affairs Minister Bandula Gunawardena at a press conference held at the Information Department, Colombo yesterday.

After thirty year war situation in the country, this time both Sinhala and Tamil people can celebrate Sinhala and Tamil new year peacefully. So it is necessary to provide consumer products at reasonable prices.

The wholesale price of Samba Rice is Rs 63 Nadu, Rs 52, Kekulu, Rs 47 and Basmati Rs 64 and if a trader sells these products at a high price the public could complain to the special task force set up to raid errant traders.

The cultivable land in the country has been extended under the Government food drive and one third of the arable land that remained unused was cultivated. Since it was the harvesting time the prices of rice and vegetables have come down he said. (DN)
