Some leading candidates of the SLFP and the National Freedom Front (NFF) are on a collision course in some districts with both parties making representations to President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
National Freedom Front (NFF) leader Wimal Weerawansa yesterday said that some SLFP candidates in Nuwara Eliya and Moneragala had targeted NFF supporters. Addressing the media in Colombo, he said that the President had strongly advised politicians concerned not to cause trouble. Responding to a query by The Island, he said that they had come under attack only in Nuwara Eliya and Moneragala districts, though NFF candidates were in the fray in 15 districts. "Of course, there are problems over manape in other districts as well but fortunately there is no violence," he said. He said that no one could deny the role played by the NFF during the war against the LTTE. "We thwarted attempts to bring down the government by defeating the budget," he said. Accusing a section of the government of playing safe when former Army Chief Gen. (retd) Sarath Fonseka threatened to bring the UPFA to its knees, Weerawansa said that his party led from the front. "We took them on at the risk of out lives. People will not forget our contribution," he said. (SF)
