Popular veteran actress Geetha Kumarasinghe, who is now contesting the General Election from the Galle District on the UPFA ticket, and Police differ considerably on the alleged attack on her campaign office at Bentota last Tuesday.

Kumarasinghe said that an unidentified gang working for a UPFA candidate had attacked one of her campaign offices in Bentota in the early hours of Tuesday (February 23).

“I am very ashamed to say that this was done by a candidate contesting from my own party.

“This attack took place because some of the supporters of this specific candidate wanted to paste his posters near my office by force,” she added.

The police media spokesman, Superintendent of Police (SP) Prishantha Jayakody told The Nation yesterday that there has been no complaint lodged with the Bentota Police regarding the attack.

“The Officer In Charge (OIC) of the Bentota Police had got to know about one of the supporters at the party office being threatened though there had been no complaint as such about an attack,” said Jayakody.

Kumarasinghe emphasised that she was in her hometown Haburugala, Elpitiya at the time the incident took place.
“Anyway my supporters made me aware of this incident at the very moment itself. We can identify the attackers at anytime because my supporters were able to video the whole incident,” she said.

She said that her main intention in entering politics is to do something worthwhile for the people of the district.
“I am a person hailing from Elpitiya, Haburugala and I consider myself as a village woman. I have faith in my people. There are thousands and thousands of people flocking around me at my meetings.

The people who are involved in such criminal acts such as attacking my party offices, fear my popularity. So, that is the whole issue behind such attacks,” she added.

According to Kumarasinghe, another of her campaign offices situated in Elpitiya too had been attacked by some unidentified people on Wednesday.(Nation)
